This is the signature dish of Omaezaki, a fishing town.
"Cold miso soup" is made by fishermen on their fishing boats by pounding fresh fish into miso dissolved in water, then adding ice and mixing it with toppings such as ginger, perilla, and pickled plums. The name ``Gawa'' seems to have come from the sound the ice cube makes when it is stirred.
The seasoning and condiments may vary depending on the manufacturer, but it is a nutritious and no-fire delicacy created by fishermen on board.
