Daifukuji natto, as the name suggests, is natto that is produced only at Daifukuji Temple and was introduced from China during the Ming Dynasty. It has a history of being presented by the seventh Ashikaga shogun to the successive shoguns from Tokugawa Ieyasu on down.
It is said that Tokugawa Ieyasu, in particular, was anxiously waiting for the gift when it came time to present it. It is characterized by the fact that it contains the middle rind of a Japanese pepper called ``karakawa'' as a condiment, and its salty taste is popular as a companion to rice or as an appetizer for sake. It is the originator of "Hama-Natto".
Hamanatto can be purchased in Hamamatsu City, Shizuoka Prefecture, at hotel shops, supermarkets, and expressway service areas in Hamamatsu City. Local shipping is also possible. (Contact: ``Yamaya Soy Sauce'' 053-461-0808, ``Suzuki Jozo'' 053-421-9751)
