When you think of Lake Hamana, you think of ``eel.'' That image has become firmly established nationwide. When you hear about Lake Hamana eel, you might think that eel is farmed in the lake, but eel is farmed in ``Yomanike'' (eel pond) dug on the shore of the lake.

In the past, eel farming ponds spread all around Lake Hamana. However, due to changes in the industrial structure and various other factors, it has now completely decreased. Most of it has been reclaimed and turned into residential areas and commercial facilities. Many of the remaining ponds have been converted into greenhouses, making it difficult to find open-air eel farming ponds unless you look for them.

Hamamatsu is the birthplace of eel farming. At the pond, which is still in active use today, the water wheel, the symbol of the eel farming pond, rotates vigorously, conveying the original scenery of Enshu.
