Kasuisai is a famous temple of the Soto sect, founded in 8 during the early Muromachi period by Zen master Jochu Tengin.
At Buddhist temples, all sects seem to offer vegetarian cuisine, but the Soto sect in particular considers eating and cooking to be part of their training, and the spirit with which they handle them seems to be very important.
At Kasuisai, you can experience Buddhist cuisine and enjoy cuisine unique to Zen temples. The food is prepared in a kitchen called Tenzoryo by a Buddhist priest using seasonal ingredients in accordance with Zen teachings. The colors are vibrant, and you can feel the changing seasons in the taste, aroma, and appearance.
