Around 1934, Eikyu Ponkan was developed in Izu Matsuzaki by Eikyu Tsuchiya, the second generation of Sanyo Farm. This is an original variety of ponkan that is grown only in Matsuzaki, Izu, and is characterized by tall fruits, a good balance of acidity, aroma, and sweetness, firm flesh, and a rich taste. It is extremely difficult to cultivate compared to regular ponkan, and is a rare species that has been inherited by only a few farmers.The deliciousness and rarity of this ponkan make it the very essence of a ``phantom ponkan.''
